This question has probably been asked loads, but can anyone recommend a cheap, easy species besides lasius Niger?

Well, that depends on how you define cheap. Myrmica rubra is certainly an easy species.

You can get M. rubra for something like that, but I don't know how much postage would be. Ants unearthed sells them, but they aren't in stock right now, and they're about £30!

You can currently buy them for 10-20 pounds at antstore and "world of ants". I don't know about world of ants, but antstore's shipping costs would probably exceed your limit.

M.rubra are very esay to find so there isnt much point in buying them. I would sugest looking under rocks and old pavement slabs.

Personally, I've never heard of a wild caught Myrmica colony adapting to captivity. They never seem to really settle in. I could be wrong though.

I have caught part of a colony of M rubra before, around 3 queens and 30-50 workers, and nothing came of them, as you said for me, they did not really settle very well, some egg laying got underway but the colony just died out very quickly.
