I was out on my porch today when I noticed a large insect flying (badly) in the breeze. I figured it was a queen or male ant but when it landed I saw that it had four wings instead of two. It crawled pretty close to me and that's when I was sure it was a termite king or queen. I didn't see any others in the area -- but I DID notice a lot of ants digging in the dirt near my porch... Poor termite doesn't have much of a chance. ;D

...but when it landed I saw that it had four wings instead of two... Winged queen ants do actually have four wings, though when they are folded onto the body (i.e., when not flying), they look like only 2 wings. If you are not sure what you have is an ant or a termite, here is a couple of clues to look for: 1) All termites have straight antennae, whereas all female ants (workers and queens) have jointed antennae. 2) Ant bodies are made up of 3 distinct parts; head, middle section, back section, whereas termites only have two parts to their bodies; the head and the body.

Myrm:
It's been about four years since I've collected ants so my memory is a little rusty, sorry! I meant that the wings on this termite were all the same size and not different sizes like ant wings. I guess I should brush up on information. I only collected a termite king and queen once in my whole life and they died within the hour! Sensitive little buggers...

Unfortunately I don't have a camera that takes good pictures of small things like insects.

Termites are wonderfully interesting! Their queen is HUGE! and they have a caste unlike any ant - king...
Sorry for the random post, but something I would like to ask you is, have you currently got any ants? ;D

I raise termites, funny enough. Very hard to raise from a queen/king, but really easy if you get an already established nest. The queens do get really big, like some big oversized alien.
