I'm getting my ants (lasius niger) tomorrow ;D and i'm preparing their nest.
I'm wondering if I should cover my ant nest or not because i want to disturb them as possible. And yes, most recommend covering but I've seen other Ant Farms on YouTube that don't cover at all, and the ants don't seem to mind:-/. Which is best?

Hi Victor,
and welcome to the forum, it's good to have you with us.
I say the best thing to do is to try and make the ants environment as close to what it would naturally be, and in this case it is to have darkness inside the nest. Yes, many people do keep their ant farms exposed to light with no real harmful effects, but I prefer to keep mine in darkness.
Where will you be keeping them?

I'm gonna be keeping the farm in the closet beneath the staircase. It's dark away from noise. it's about room temperature as well. i even have a little cute light bulb to heat it up lightly and light up the room.

Ants generally adapt well to light, but as Myrm says they will always be more comfortable in a dark nest. There's no real reason to have the nest uncovered when you aren't observing them, anyway.

I also agree with the previous answers.
Shouldn't this be in the Keeping Ants Board?

Shouldn't this be in the Keeping Ants Board? Strictly speaking I guess it should. I have had a look at some of the topics in this board and there are quite a number of threads that would best be suited in the Keeping Ants chamber. I will move them across over the next day or so.

I don't cover mine, but my room is nearly always gloomy anyway. They seem fairly content and the queen is somewhere completely inside the soil anyhow.

Sometimes it'd be better to cover the whole thing. Lasius flavus may benefit from that.
