I've fed a fire ant colony as well as an unidentified black ant colony, but the fire ants seem to be more enthusiastic about their food (e.g. gathering in huge masses), while the black ones ALWAYS seem not interested. It happens with ham, any fruit, or dead beetles. so I ask, why? sorry if the question sounds too vague.

Hmm, interesting. It could be that the Solenopsis (fire ant) species has a higher egg-laying rate than the other species, so the black ants generally already have as much food as they need for their relatively small amount of brood, but the Solenopsis always have hungry larvae to feed. I could be wrong though, it's just an initial hypothesis.

It could be that one colony has more lavae stage brood, so need more protein.
