Yesterday, I found out that there is a species of leafcutter ant (Mycocepurus smithii) which has no males, and asexually reproduces by parthenogenesis. Very interesting, I think.

That's sexism! Those ants are worst than the Sky1 commentators!
Do they do it like slugs then?

As I mentioned, they reproduce asexually by parthenogenesis. They don't "do it" at all, they clone themselves.

Parthenogenesis? I'm not sure if it's possible, could well be though, you would just have to trigger a cell to develop into an ovum before meiosis.

Very interesting idea, and it's down to us to work it out. We're the next generation.

although the idea of cloneing domestic animals such as hens sound cool, it dose have a huge flaw... If a disease (such as bird flu) started killing off loads of hens, and they were all cloned, then none of the hens would survive as none would be immune to it becuase they are basicly copies of each other and therefore have the same immune system Just thourght i would point that out, let me know if i am wrong

And they are also planning on cloning animals with bare knowledge. My sister did a class on it. Apparently cows will just eat. Move along. Eat. Move along. Until they get slaughtered. I think that's wrong :/
