Hey everyone I was wondering if anybody has had a ant world before and what they thought of the substrate that comes with it is it any good? Also would it be eaisier to see M.Rubra in sand or soil? Any help will be appreciated thank you liam

I've never had an ant world, but I believe M. rubra would be more visible in a lighter coloured substrate, as they are dark red and would blend in less.

I have owned several Antworlds. The nesting material is basically sand.
I prefer to keep my ants in soil but rubra can be seen clearly against both due to the fact they like to make wide tunnels and large chambers.

The nesting material just looks weird it has gold flakes in it doesnt look like sand thats why I didnt no if it would be any good.

If in doubt, just use soil from your garden.

I use the AntWorld and I am impressed (for £10 anyway!) The "sand" is quite weird, but my M. rubra are fine, they have built a huge tunnel and get on fine. I hope the sand sticks together well and doesn't collapse any time soon. Wondering when to water it :S

I have had loads of an worlds and they are really good but the sand is very strange, I dont think ants would like it.

Yes, I have seen some vary large ant nests in compost before I have a compost bin I my back garden and a huge ants nest lives inside I can find ants all over my garden coming from the compost bin in the corner.
