Hi the only time I have seen ants in a line was with captive leaf cutters. They were walking on a pipe in a spiral to get to the leaves.

I saw some ants making a trail in Spain. They looked like lasius niger, but may not have been that exact species. At some point in the night or early morning, they'd located some food that'd been left on the counter and there was a big trail of ants coming in from under the door. It wasn't single file though, about three lanes in each direction. Oh and despite being in Spain, traffic was moving on the left.
