Hi i am from India. I find this site much interesting and exciting. I am going to make a short film where I require some ants going, by making a line. Now the problem is that this is winter and its hard to make that. But as I have to finish my work within this month, I captured some ants and freed them at my roof spreading some food around but that didn't work. Some of them died some moved on. So plz suggest me how that would be possible in my roof where has a mini garden or in a damp outside wall in a old building. If require I can provide photograph also.
Thanks in advance.

Sorry I must have missed this thread. The only way I can see this working is by capturing or buying a colony including the Queen. Without the Queen the ants won't have a "home" so will just wonder around looking for there old home I guess. If you get a small container without a lid, add some dirt, the Queen and her workers then it might work. But a small colony would hardly need any food so won't really have to go far to look for it. Also not all species would even make a line. Leaf cutter ants will but they will be impossible to keep in your case (and costy). Messor Barbarus can do it, but I never tried to force it, so no idea if that will work either. In short, trying to force an organised insect as the ants are to form a line so you can film it is close to impossible If it wasn't winter I would suggest you simply try to locate a big colony in a forest. Maybe try to find if the local zoo has ants?

On topic, I don't think it would be very easier to do, pretty close to impossible. Best bet would be to try and find a colony in the wild that are doing it.

OK.
Yes If I think I know what you mean, yes you can make some ants going through one direction.
Here is the plan:
I watched a document on E.O Wilson. He created a pheromone trail using a tweezer and an ant.
First of all. You would need to find a medium-large colony foraging. 1 piece of A4, 1 small wooden pick or stick and 1 of the foraging ants. Oh and some food.
First of all put down the white piece of paper and add some food on the paper near the colony. Wait until the first few workers spread the news. When there are several get another piece of food and place it on the other end of the paper.
Quickly get an ant near the gaster with the tweezers gently, get your wooden pick and the ant will be ''sparying'' chemicals as it feels threatend. Make sure to rub it a bit on the gaster.
Put down the ant and with the wooden pick from the 1st source of food make a direction ( wiggly if you want ) to the 2nd source of food. Once an ant discovers the trail she will follow it and and so will the others thus you will see ants going in a wiggly line to the 2nd source of food.
