So, not sure how many of you keep desert/dry climate ants...since Europe is... well, not a desert as far as I'm aware. Not sure what Southern Europe is like, but...
I use dirt nests mainly, so giving my ants enough water is hard...as too much and it just soaks into the dirt and molds. Or it just stagnates at the bottom. But I found after so many years of ant keeping...not sure why I didn't realize before, but if you use test tube(s) filled mostly with water and blocked with cotton...this gives the ants a permanent source of water. I imagine this works great if you have to go on vacation...since water is most important thing for ants. Food is easy enough to deal with, and I believe ants can go without food for a little while anyway.
A great strategy, that for some reason I never thought of. And its easy to refill and what not, and lasts a long time.

Thanks. And I keep Pheidole hyatti. Which I've found in a semi-arid area by my apartments. (edit) And I just thought, this can apply for any ants really. Though I know some ants prefer a more moist nest...but still a good source of water. Especially like I mentioned, if you go on vacation or something.
