I voted other as I use most of the above. It all depends on the species really, or where they were collected.
I also find that having no substrate works well. (Very easy to clean and the ants do not seem to mind to much. Again depends on the species and sometimes the individual colony.)

I use pumice stone and plaster (Thanks manity for including that ) because there is no chances of tunnel collapse and I am still able to observe any of their natural behaviors if I add sand.

I like sand for my Nigers as I can see them better. But I would put Flvus in Soil
