How is your colection going? what do you mean? And Thomas if you are correct I found a possible one off nest that will prove you wrong, last summer. I took a photo of the brood the had being revealed when the nest got damaged. When I accidently zoomed in on the photo, on my phone with pupa, which I have never seen.

Hello Stevant, They can have both. As far as I am aware all ant species can have both. The reason for this is that in order for the larvae to spin a cocoon (much like a caterpillar ) they must have something rough to attach to. That surface could be sand, soil, clay, plaster, wood, etc. However glass, plastic or anything else that is quite smooth will not work. If a larvae cannot spin a cocoon than they will go through their metamorphosis in the pupae stage. Basically everything happens the same except when they are in a pupae stage than you get to see everything. There is also the random larvae that does not bother to spin a cocoon. Flavus

Oh thanks flavus. They were in soil so not sure what they were up to. Several coccoons and pupa of different stages. @manity - My colonies are small the largest is 15 workers got them last week (lasius niger) the messor barbarus are small but doing better now. And the lasius flavus had an accident of water leaking in the test tube it killed 4 or 5 but I managed to save 3 which was amazing since they'd being in water for about 2 days, one woke up when I moved them out the tube and it gave the others the kiss of life. Just proves never give up on drowned ants.
