I have a Lasius niger queen and is still in the test tub. I put in a cotton bud covered in sugar water and a big fly. The queen has now start to cover the fly with cotton wool from the test tub that hold back the water. Why ?

Hello and welcome to the Forum juststarted. I think she may be doing this because she wants the cotton wool to absorb the flies fluids. She will then pick up the cotton wool and bring it back to her tube. I have had my ants do this with soil. They let the fluids absorb in the soil and than carry it back to the nest for the larvae and other workers. Flavus

The fly is in the tube about 2mm away from the eggs she pulled it there. she took off all the legs and one wing.

The legs may be being eaten by the larvae, the wing I think they may remove as waste?
They mayalso be doing what Flavus says so that they can remove the body of the fly from their chamber to stop it rotting in there?
