Yesterday I recieved a messor babrbarus queen. Im waiting for the a small colony of them because ants kallyta sent the wrong thing. There is no water in her test tube so im not sure what to do since she is fairly stressed. I want her to be ok for when I return her. Also how do they know that she wont lay eggs til next spring?

They start laying eggs after hibernation, at least that's what I have read. No idea if you can speed that up by keeping the nest warm. Also you could try to soak some cotton wool in water and leave it near her, just make sure it won't drip any water.

Hi steve,Messor only hibernate for a short period as far as I know, so it would only be seven weeks or so.It is advisable to hibernate her as it will lead to a healthier Queen and a large egg laying count for next year. From what I've read she would need at least 80,000 workers in order to survive with out hibernating.Hope this helped ttttt

I would place her tube in a small foraging area. Have a secondary water source in the foraging area and place a new tube that has water in it into the foraging area.
Personally I would not hibernate her, I would keep her well fed and hope she lays eggs. If she does not lay eggs in the next 3 weeks put her in hibernation for 4-6 weeks and than take her out of it. She should lay eggs than.
