Well, I'm thinking of ordering some messor barbarus from edu-sci, but I have heard bad things about them and was wondering what your experiences were with them? I wouldnt want to have a dead queen turn up as I can not afford to just keep replacing them.

Hi Stevant It doesn't matter what company you deal with, you'll always get people who have had postive experiences and those with negative experiences. Some will say never to use a certain company whilst others will swear by them. I have purchased ants from Edu-Sci in the past and have had no pro Plem with them. I recently purchased colonies of Lasius niger for Animal Bin Lid and Austin Bin Lid and those colonies are stil going strong with their respective owners. No matter how good a company is,they cannot guarantee that a colony will arrive in good condition (would you arrive at a destination without injury if I stuck you in a box and sent you in the mail sytstem? ) and they cannot guarantee that a colony will survive once it has arrived.

I don't know. The best thing would be to contact them and ask what their policy is. PS> I'm back in Plymouth now

I did some reading for Stevant on the edu-sci site, it basically comes down to this: If a queen is death on arrival you should send it back within 24 hours using 1st class post (I'm not from the UK, but I assume that high priority mail). They will then inspect the queen and send you back a new one. This only works for queens, not the workers. If you want more security then I suggest you mailing them and asking simply if they will send you a new queen if your queen dies on arrival. If they mail back saying that they do then you have written proof

Personally ,steve i had a good experience with them. When I bought my lasius niger queen (still alive)Came with 15 workers.Free postage to most of the world making the total cost £10.00 over the £17.00 approx from the ant store.de.It took them 2 working days to reach the east coast of Ireland where I live.

Hello, Yes as myrm says, the Lasius niger colony is still going strong. But the first time I bought my M.barbarus queen was from Edu-Sci and she after 2 - 3 weeks passed away, But Edu-Sci were very kind are replaced it with another queen who is going strong till this day is going strong with her 25 workers and brood
