Hi Chicken No, they do not sleep, at least not in the sense we do in which our bodies shut down and we enter REM sleep and dreaming. They do, however, go into phases of rest in which they may appear to remain motionless for several hours with just a slight wave of their antennae every so often. Even hibernation is not really sleep, it's simply that ants cannot shiver and therefore produce body heat when they get to cold. If you watch an ant subject to temperatures below 5*C they become vary sluggish and eventually stop moving as their muscles do not work anymore. I guess you could call it a sleep of sorts but, as I say, not in the sense that mammals sleep.

dolphins actually shut down half there brain as well Land living mammals such as humans breathe involuntarily however dolphins and whales choose when they breath and must be conscious to breath, and so can't shut down.
