I never imagined the first nantics appearing would be this exciting, haha. This L.Niger queen won the brood race against two others and an L.Flavus. I can't get over how tiny and cute the nantics are! I knew they'd be somewhat small, but they are unbelievably diddy. Since she won the race she'll be the only L.Niger to live in one of the ytong nests we made this summer (the other is reserved for the L.Flavus): We designed modular nests so that I could fly them home easily and expand them with extra modules when needed. Still have to clean it up, glue the plexi to the front and block/tube up the holes. I've been toying with the idea of treating and painting the outside of the ytong to match my room and reduce chipping/dust, any tips? Also want to throw a quick thanks to the kind members here who gave me some great advice for getting this far I've really enjoyed researching, collecting and raising queens!

Very cool. What country are you taking them from? The ants I caught in England a while back, but I was visiting Finland until last week. My final days there were spent frantically designing and making nests so I could take some home! My first design was way too big to fit in my hand luggage, but these modules are only 100x100x42mm.

I too am always amazed at how tiny nanitics are. I currently have a small Ln colony consisting of one queen and about 20 tiny workers which I recently got from AntsUK. After being used to seeing my normal sized Lu workers, these Ln are indeed "diddy".

what is the diference between nantics and normal workers? Nanitics are the tiny "under-nourished" workers you usually get with the first few generations of workers in a new colony.

That formicarium looks very neat and professional, good job! ;D Thank you, that means a lot we took great care with the measurements and tools, though the brick was slightly damp when we started carving which made using the dremel somewhat difficult. Should be moving the first tube-full of ants into one soon!
