So right now I'm abroad for the stated period of time. When I left, my queens (three L.niger, one L.flavus) were just settled into their darkened test tubes and had begun laying eggs. When I get home in a few weeks what am I likely to see when I open the box? First time rearing ants so I've no idea how long each egg/larval phase generally takes. I keep having horrific dreams that I come home to masses of ants parading about, though I know that's impossible

As long as you have sealed your test tube up you shouldn't have a parade of ants marching around your house . When you come back the Lasius niger queens should have larvae and/or cocoons as this species brood phases are quite fast. Well they are for me. For Lasius flavus, you should probably have eggs and large larvae just about to turn into cocoons. This specie's brood phase is a little bit slower than their cousins. All of my Lasius niger queens had around 5 cocoons while my flavus queens had larvae a couple of weeks ago. But this all can change with the temperature.
