So I'm interested in starting my ant colony now, finally sold some of the baby snakes I bred this year so got some starting cash but still don't want to sink it all into the mega expensive glass stuff from antstore.
Was looking at the cheaper Ytong stuff, can anyone direct me to a nice cheap place I can pick up a good starting nest?

Forgot to mention I want to start with Camponotus japonicus, not sure if that will influence how the farm should be ?

Where do you live?? Also that is a very large species so if you are not in asia then i highly recommend against them

I live in Portsmouth, or near enough. And it seems the easiest species to keep which fit into what I want from my ants, ideally something that doesn't hibernate and something that has major's / soldiers / some-other-class of ant Tis all very expensive!

These ants grow to be huge .... It is not a good idea especially if you are working on a tight budget because.you will need a very large nest after three or four years

Do you know any other species that fits what I want? Also I don't mind shelling out the money later it's just a big lump sum to get started when thinking about it for a long while it's going to be £100 for 4 ants and a load of pretty glass that won't get used. Maybe I should start with something easier to see if I'm really interested and can keep with it, but I don't want to end up with a large colony taking up a lot of room and then go "Well I'm enjoying this, time to dump these and get the ones I actually wanted in the first place"

Well if that is how you feel maybe myrmica rubra might work for you. They are a nice ants but also could be released in your garden when you decide to get new ones.Your other options could be Formica fusca lasius niger and flavus these are starter ants and easy to keep but mainly can be released in England

This is true, these are the ants I've been reading alot about being starter ants, I guess I'm just not into the idea of "starting" animals, would rather just get what I like and want as the others don't really interest me. If I get an ant species it'll have to be one that doesn't hibernate and has another caste of ant other than workers. I can't honestly say why I just like the variety it's what I like about ants, the hibernating part is purely because they will be positioned ontop of a large boa constrictor cage (7ft long) which emits a lot of heat and it seems pointless not to utilize that to keep a colony that can stay functional all year round.
Edit: Cheapest I can find the whole set up, including ants. Is from a german company AntStore I believe, that totals at £78 including delivery (though I'm not sure if that delivery is just for germany or if they'll deliver to the UK too)
Another one is QueenAntShop but that is £70 alone, not including the £40 it'll cost to get the ants.
Other option as said in a previous post is to make my own Ytong nest, which I would rather not do as I'll mess it up no doubt..
Any other UK based sites that sell this stuff I might be able to get a cheaper deal at?
