My brother found a fungus growing ant queen a few weeks ago but it died. We came home one day and it had mold in its joints. I never took any pictures.
My main question is: Has anyone kept or wanted to keep a species of fungus growing ant. Does anyone have experience?

Do you mean leafcutter ants?

Some species are easier to keep than others. One thing to note is that a few of the more common attines are semi-claustral, so they are easy to find foraging above ground; however: no fungus. Without a sample of their specially cultivated fungus, the queen or colony cannot survive. Not all attines are "leaf cutters", with many of them simply foraging for litter on the ground. For the time of year, you probably found Trachymyrmex, one such semi-claustral fungus-grower.
