My brother had this idea for a queen ant trap. His idea was: Get a container full of loose sand and put a light on it at night. The ants should try to build a nest he said. I disagreed because they build their chambers in the daylight. What do think about it?

Some species do hold their mating flights at night. I think the Leptothorax-like genera tend to fly at that time. Also, any diurnal species who failed at mating that day will sometimes seek lights at night.
I know there aren't Camponotus in the UK, but the Myrmentoma subgenus (mini Camponotus) are a type of ant which seems to only fly at night. I've only ever found one queen, but I'd like to maybe have a shot at one of these species if I find them again.
Basically, it's worth a try. Remember that ants can't see red light very well, so shoot for white or blue.

Ants don't necessarily build chambers in daylight, they build them at any time, day or night.

Yeah, you're likely to catch a bunch of things which aren't ants. Rather than give her a nesting medium, you should probably just provide hiding spots.
