Hi,
Guess what - my Lasius Nigers came today after one working day, as opposed to the estimated five. Great service and quality of ants from antsuk.com. I ordered their starter set A, which comes with a high quality slim tank and a foraging tank. I have set it all up and put a very thin, dry layer of sand in the foraging tank and, on a little dish, one drop of their honey solution.
My ants are a great quality queen and twenty five workers. There are already loads of eggs! As stated, I put their test tube in the foraging tank, the slim tank is full of moist loam, and have noticed the workers emerging further and further towards the entrance of the open test tube, checking out the honey. I am being very patient, and am not moving them around or anything, but can't help but notice that though the queen is great looking, she is very slow and is not moving apart from wiggling around, and is staying near her brood.
When the workers have checked out the slim tank, and feel it is safe, will they guide her to it and help her carry her brood? This may sound stupid, but will she walk like other ants? She is so slow I can't imagine her walking!
Also, the tube connecting the slim tank and the outworld is pretty long, 50cm, so will the workers actually ever discover the slim nesting tank by themselves (I.e will they follow the tube completely)?
Even if they don't for a while, will the workers supply the queen and brood with the honey and proteins that are there while she is in the test tube?
Thanks so much!!
