Hi there, I'm a brand new 'ant farmer', my purchases from AntStore should arrive on Monday or Tuesday according to the tracking. So - I'm planning the setup, and started worrying about the ants maybe starting to nest in the outworld.
Background/setup: I bought the Antstore starter set 25x15 cm and will populate it with Lasius niger. Got some sand, stones and cacti to decorate the outworld (I want to make it a desert-like scene, although it isn't the natural look for Scandinavia)
Myquestion: will Lasius niger dig under the plastic decorations if there is approximately 1 cm of dry sand in the outworld? Will pouring a thin layer of plaster and setting the decorations in that (then scattering sand on the surface before it dries) prevent this? Or can they still find tiny gaps and hide in the outworld?
Thank you!

1cm of sand is to thin for them to nest, and if the nesting area is suitable they would almost certainly choose that over 1cm of sand anyway. Just be patient for them to move out of the test tube

Wow, thank yoy for your quick replies! I'll just try to make the formicarium cozy then (moist, cover with black cardboard/red foil etc) and not worry!

Nicci, once they have nested you can remove the black bin bag or red foil as they will not have the time to relocate once settled ;D.
It's good to see more and more females getting into ant keeping (Myrmecology)!

I fill my outworlds with about 1 cm of plaster and sprinkle sand, add rocks, and customize the landscape.
