Is there a way to keep L.niger in a tank without a lid?, I have been doing some tests on an ant I found. First I put the ant in a jar and smeared the rim with vaseline (Petroleum Jelly) it could easily get out with a large amount smeared on the jar but slipped with only a small amount but still escaped, I then mixed the vaseline with bottled lemon juice, the ant disliked this but still got out, I then mixed the vaseline and lemon juice with ground black pepper, the ant would step onto the mix but would not cross. I then released the ant.
i think the pepper mix smeared round the top of the tank would work, but i need to do more tests to make sure the pepper doesn't kill them.

PTFE is the best way, but I have slight trouble with the edges of rectangular glass basins where the silicon is, as the PTFE doesn't coat the silicon... I tried to cut all the excess out when I got the basin but it didn't work I put some parafin oil in the corners as well which has helped a lot but the ants I got (Formica fusca) are bigger than I expected so the PTFE is too narrow in some places and they can cross it, although I'm not too bothered this time but will try to perfect my escape protection for future colonies
