I wouldn't use gel habitats if I were you. There are many reasons why, listed on an ant information website which I'm not allowed to link to.

First of all, Gel ant farms were designed for short-term keeping of desert ants, who as far as I am aware, don't require much sweet food. Not Lasius flavus. Another thing is that the gel does not contain the required nutrients, just some of them. The Gel also is notorious for molding. I suggest that if you have a gel farm then take out the gel and fill it with dark sand.
A better formicarium would be a Antstore Starter Set, or simply a Antworld from Interplay.

As an alternative to dark sand, you could use soil. I've never found a flavus colony in sand. They are called a meadow ant, so perhaps soil would be a better idea?
