Hi there!
My small colony of Lasius Niger in the test tube is getting bigger week by week and now there are more than 15 workers plus the Queen!
I have a doubt about the "static" behaviour of my colony: usually one or two workers walk around in the plastic box which contains the test tube and the other ladies stand almost still inside the tube... is it normal? I have always thought to ants as very frenetic insects, but the behaviour of my colony seems to prove it wrong!
Is there anything strange with them?!
Thanks, bye!

Hi No, what you are seeing is perfectly normal. It's a common misconception that ants are always active and busy. If there is simply nothing to do ants will just stand motionless; what's the point of wasting energy by working when nothing needs doing. My Lasius umbratus colony has several hundred workers and many of them sometimes just stand about doing nothing but waving their antenna about for long periods of time.
