Hey everyone, Just posting a link to Edu-Sci as they are having a sale on L.niger. I am not sure if it is a good price having never bought ants before. (Canadian Government does not allow it.) Anyways heres the link: store.edu-sci.com/black-colony-lasius-niger-p-283.htmlFlavus

thats still quite expensive. On ebay you can buy the same amount for £6.99 plus £1.99 p+p. If you ask for a deal on two you can get 'em for about £11 (thats what I did)
So, flavus, you raised all colonies you have from a single queen? Thats quite impressive what are the sizes of them?

Yes stevant, I raised them all from queens I caught myself. My largest most successful colony was a small Camponotus species. It got to 300 to 400 workers before I released them. I have had multiple colonies with 200-250 workers and many small colonies with under 20 workers. Currently I do not have any ants. I simply released my larger colonies. I did not have enough room or a suitable formicarium for the smaller colonies so decided to release them as well. My yard and local woods saw a rise in ant colonies. Flavus

It's a shame you had to release them but it's good there is more wild colonies. Maybe eventually you will have colonies like myrms original one. What were your set-ups?

I personally do not like to have large colonies. (Unless they are a favourite species.) I had many different set-ups. Ones that I am not so proud of :/, to ones that I am very proud and happy of. I had some large jars hooked together for some small colonies. (It was basically two rather large jars hooked together for one colony.) That was not really something I was to happy about but it was what I had to work with and it did it's job. I did have a really nice slim line but it is getting repaired now. (The glue popped open in one spot.) I also have several large perfectly flat solid blocks of wood that I am going to/have routered tunnels into. Flavus
