Both. If there is no surfaces that the larvae can stick to then they will not spin the cocoon and pupaete. If there is sand or something they can stick to then they will spin a cocoon. As far as I know there are no ill effects to not spinnng a cocoon as opposed to spinning a cocoon.

Strictly speaking, they don't really have both. They are formicine ants and therefore have cocoons. Though it is better for the larvae to be placed against a solid surface in order for them to spin a cocoon, or have sand particles placed on them, a worker ant will also stand over the larvae in order to allow its body to be used as a anchor for cocoon spinning.
It is very rare for them to have pupae. I have only seen it happen once.

What if there is only a queen and no worker? Does the queen take on the workers role? Exalt for the correction and new information.

But it did not happen to all the larvae, only 2 or 3 from each tube pupated. Odd.

I was about to say the same thing as Myrm, I think there is a difference in egg laying from formicine ants and myrmicine ( I'm not sure if it spelt like that )
