...by Microwaves. Apparently ants are too small and the Microwaves actually miss them, so it dosen't harm them. Obviously don't try this at home! There was a video on youtube about this, but I can't find it anymore

...and probably why they wouldn't be affected by nuclear fallout.

Correct Myrm ;D
Although aren't Gamma rays much smaller than Microwaves?

...and probably why they wouldn't be affected by nuclear fallout. Plus Gamma rays can only travel in straight lines so anything below ground level wont really be affected, although there might be a shortage of food for many species especially where cockroaches are not native. Although if there was a nuclear fallout i don't think many species would survive a nuclear winter

In a Nuclear fall out, though the initial effects may not kill ants, the long terms might. As Jolon said about nuclear winters, and other environmental factors could contribute to extinction, though some ant (and other insects) may survive.

Well this is true for most microwaves, the microwaves themselves are spread out enough that ant can find safe areas , but if a microwave were to hit an ant, it would be heated up just like anything else.
Also gamma rays can penetrate quite far into the ground, which causes the ground in turn to become irradiated. If fallout was bad enough it would sterilize the entire planet. It really depends on the severity.

Thinking about it ant's could survive, along with most insects because they have a greater resistance to radiation, also food would be available from other insects, and basic plant life may survive. Ant's are designed to survive in any natural condition.
