Before I went away on my holiday, I was very sure one of my queens had several small eggs and larvae, some larger than others. When I came back a week later, I see her only two, very large, fat larvae. What do you think may have happened? The pile is gone and now there's simply two larvae. Could it be that she ate some? Myrm once mentioned larvae hatch from eggs. Could they have been the egg "shells" surrounding smaller larvae that I originally saw? Or perhaps I'm just losing my mind What do you all think?

Chances are she has eaten the eggs, which is something queens often do. Some of the eggs she lays will not develop into larvae but remain to be eaten. When the larvae emerges from the egg it will generally eat the "egg shell". She would also have fed the eggs to the current larvae. It's not unusual but is quite normal.
