I feel bad for all you British ant lovers who must face hibernation this time of year. In November, it's very hot in Australia and ants are mating like crazy! Found this big, fat ant hanging around the forest looking for a place to dig. I've never seen any ant like this before (none this large + black + shape) so I'm sure she should be a queen. What do you guys think? Sorry the image isn't as good as usual, the business camera is in use at the moment. Not used to finding queens of this size, so I'm pretty excited

i think she looks a bit like a formica queen but im no good at identification and i dont think that there are formica ants in australia

Yeah, not so sure on the situation yet... She is worrying me, not completely sure she is a queen as she isn't as 'calm' as most queens I've had before. But it's early days. Will have to wait for eggs!

She's laid an egg, so defo a queen. Will be interesting to see what species she is...
