hi I've just read through the entire journal and from it I've discovered there is alot more to ants than i first thought. I've just brought a small aquarium that i was going to use as an ant farm but i really have no idea what to do next. please help if at-all possible.

Hi Chicken2012 Welcome to the forum, it's great to have you with us. Well, the first thing you'll need is something to keep the ants in, which you already have, so you're well on your way to keeping ants. The next thing to do is fill it will sand or soil and then make it slightly damp. Get some ants and put them in. That is a vary simple explanation but if you click here you'll find more advice.

i was thinking maybe put a piece of board or plastic across one side with a bit of tube going in the side and fill the gap with soil so the ants use this as their nest and the rest of the space could be used as a foraging area. and thank you for the link it was very use full.

Chicken2012 the ants will gravitate to the soil, your plan may not work.

It may work if the soil in the side part is slightly damp and the soil on the foraging side is vary shallow and dry.

possibly dermy but there's only one way to find out. and thank you myrm for your ever help full advice. i was thinking maybe keeping l niger ants as where i live they are common and so i have more chance of capturing a queen.

what would i feed them dead insects? fruit? veg? and what sort of substrate would they need to make the nest etc
