Hi Ansley No proplem about asking basic questions, or any questions at all; it's what this forum is for and we were all beginners once. I have heard of people using that red stuff but I don't use it myself. The red stuff won't allow a clear view into the nest so you'd remove to watch the ants anyway. Personally, I always use black bin bags folded into shape and if I want to watch my ants I remove it, and then replace it when finished.

My ant farm is home made, And I havn't brought any of his products yet. Ask him on his youtube channel AntsCanada Do you make it yourself? Yes, me and my dad made it We are adding soil then the last plastic window and it's done. Hopefully I'll find good queens this year!

I would moisture the sand after you have put it in, that's what I did! Also, I'd use the red acetate plastic, in looks better in my opinion! (But I guess it doesn't make much of a difference)
