KK, we can expect to see many species of ant in the UK flying within the next few weeks, for example; Lasius niger tend to fly in the first or second week of July.
Here you can list any mating flights you see so that others can take note and relate whether the ants in their area are flying too.

Well... I do not live in the UK...but I've seen a few males outside today! (lasius niger) It's 27 C so I'm guessing the flights might start today!!! Be prepared!

It was only around 20ºC today. Really wet from the rain and not very sunny. I think the flights in southend are gunna be a long way away. So instead i'll purchase a queen ant with workers and eggs.

At this time of year I would strongly advise against it. The flights could be any time now. Will it kill you to wait a few more days?

Myrmica had there flights yesterday, well on the 7th. I caught 7 queens but released them in my garden hoping for a rubra colony in my garden, dont worry, they are native, 1 minute up the road

Although i don't have anything proper to catch them in. I only have these card test tubed i made. And i'm not sure if it'll work, but I'll give it a go. They have windows, but not over the whole tube. If i put some small layer of dirt, do you think they will be ok in it?

If your setup provides all these, it will be fine. Dirt is not necessary. Also, make sure there are no holes large enough for a first worker to escape through. First workers are tiny.
