Will queen ants start a colony in a plastic cylinder. I want to be able to see the queen. They may, but I wouldn't recommend putting a single queen into a big setup, first start her in a test tube set up like this... This setup gives the queen constant assess to water through the damp cotton wool and can easily be kept in the dark to encourage laying eggs. If you use this setup make sure air can pass through the end cotton bung otherwise you queen will run out of oxygen! Another thing is, if you put a small colony in a large setup they may become very scared and stressed from the vast open space and so I suggest either starting her in a small test tube setup or getting an established colony for the cylinder Hope this helps!
