Well well well, Very nice ants, I love them, Queen on the left looks like she is most definitely Lemani (I've kept them ) But the queen on the right seems to be Fusca (Generally Darker but that might be because of shade) But don't bank on it. If they were caught in a vAry similar place maybe they are both Lemani.

Queen on right is very, very dark brown. She looks jet black most of the time with dark brown/red legs. Formica lemani? Thats what I thought after doing some research on the web. But do they get this big? I thought L.niger was a large UK species but the unknown queen dwarfs L.niger.

Excellent Thanks for the id. Do these ants have any special requirements, or do general ant keeping rules apply?

Formica Fusca and Lemani are vAry similar, I can explain briefly on everything you might want to know popping in random facts about them.
Formica Lemani and fusca have fast running and large workers. They seem to LOVE honey and are normally found in mountainous area's like some small peaks in the lake district. I had a colony that were lovely and Probably one of my favourite colonies I have ever kept, They grow really quickly like you pointed out. I had around 10 workers faster than my Lasius Niger's (Captured on the same day) even had larvae!
Lovely specie to keep, they have no special requirement, and general ant keeping rules obviously do apply. They don't grow as large as some colonies, but Not that you expect to keep a couple of thousands do you >.<
Hope I helped as usual.
