Hi,
I am 13 years old. I don't have any ants but love them along with all other wildlife and animals. I was first considering buying an Ant World ant farm with a colony of Lasius Niger , one queen and 25 workers. I love the idea of breeding them.
I am really, really inexperienced and so confused about what to do! Okay, so I recently discovered the Camponotus Ligniperda Carpenter ants. They look big and social and perfect for me! However I have read that they burrow under rotting wood, so would they need more of a tank enclosure as opposed to the slim one, optimal for viewing? That would rule them out for me.
I believe they might be hard to keep, so I am back with the idea of some good old Lasius Niger. However, I have heard (I'm out of my depth here!!) about how the sand nests can easily collapse. . . Not ideal with my slightly hyper kitten who, though will not be allowed access to them when not with me, may jump on the table or something. Anyway, I would just worry.
I have seen the Antquariums and I am so, so tempted! They are so beautiful! And I like how sturdy they are. I want one, but apparently the only ants that can live in one are Harvester ants. This would be okay, because they let you order them with the kit, but I'm sure they will only give you workers and no queen so the colony won't be proper. I am a keen Biology student so want a proper ant ecosystem viewing point, not 20 workers that will last a week.
1. Does anyone know another species of ant that would be able to live in an An Antquarium
2. Can Camponotus Ligniperda or Lasius Niger possibly live in the gel Antquarium environment if. Give them a head start with holes?
Sorry about this, I would appreciate any answers so much! Thanks!!
