Hi, my mum called me into her room saying that 1 of my black (lasius niger) ants had escaped, as many of you know I recently lost some workers. Now, this worker is far to big to be 1 of mine, but I cannot be certain, what should I do?

I say enter It in your Lasius Niger colony, You have 5 or more workers in your colony right?
Well Either way, they will accept the worker or they will kill it and use it for brood, a plus either way, if you have more than 3 workers you are almost certainly safe and if you let it go outside it will die almost certainly overnight as it will be cold and it won't be in a colony so theres no point in that at all.

I have no idea why rubra said that, but do not put it in! A worker that large could actually kill a queen. I've seen it.

I doubt it, 1 worker over 5+ Lasius Nigers AND a queen, I think not.

A full size L. niger worker could kill a queen. Very possible. Unlikely, but possible. Also it would stress them out and after what they've been through that's not a good idea.

Or it could easily kill a few workers, before it is killed.

I just voted in your bin lid poll. I would put the worker in and closely watch what happens when it comes into contact with the others. If the set up is so that the worker would be immediately able to reach the queen, then I wouldn't risk it, but if she is well hidden then you could try it and see what happens. You need to consider; if she reached the queen would you be able to intervene easily in time? If in doubt then do not risk it.

Well I used a pair of tweezers to pic up the worker and hold it in front of 1 of, my wn. Itnearly jumped in terror and it sprinted (if ants can sprint ;D) away.

Hmm. Rubra: We may think differently but I do respect you. I'm just trying to make sure the best advice is given.
No hard feelings.
