I have one of those going right now. It has aphids. About 20 of them, a colony of potato bugs, around 20ish and a colony of milipedes. I would guess 15 but the babies are hard to find. I am going to put a Camponotus queen in it as soon as I boost her.

15 June 2010, TuesdayThese ants have become very active in their foraging and eating. I put a fly in the other day and about 20 ants were seen feeding on it. May not sound like many but it is a big increase from just a few weeks ago. They still continue to show me their brood by placing it in the plastic tubing connecting the ant farm to the foraging tank. Incidentally, they have shown no interest in expanding into the second ant farm I attached to their current nesting box. I may take it off an keep it as a spare.

26 June 2010, SaturdayHi Today I am updating via iPhone from Marwell Zoo (where I am with HNBL ) I fed these ants today and they were happily tucking into a fly when I left. They are certainly much more active in foraging now. w00t!

31 July 2010
Many of the cocoons that these ants had have now hatched and so the worker population is increasing. w00t! ;D
There is also quite a bit of nest expansion going on with tunnels leading off the main chamber.

21 August 2010, Saturday
Please note that this will be my last update for this journal until Christmas time as tomorrow I will be working away from home.
This colony is developing very well now and I hope they will continue to become as my original Lasius niger colony (which started off from a single queen to a colony so large that I had to move it out into the garden where they still live to this very day). I am expecting the egg laying rate of this colony to slow very soon due to the fact their fresh food intake will drop significantly whilst I am away and due to the winter approaching.

It's okay Miles Bin Lid. Because I spend so much time away from home due to my job, I cannot look after my colonies properly.
Only 3.5 years to go and I will be home for good and have much more time to devote to my ants.

Ummm, only? Hopefully Ill still be interested in ants at that time. I am in the process of ordering a new forminicarium right now, so I might add. Are you going to realease them because of her death?
