From the first journal entry for this colony on my website:
9 September 2007
I brought this colony from Antstore after believing my other Lasius niger colony had died out after I saw what look suspiciously like a segment of Lasius niger queen abdomen on the surface of the soil ... So I have placed this new colony in a spare Antstore Starter Kit I had. They seemed to have settled in nicely and have tunnelled into the sand of the nesting box.
31 May 09, Saturday
This is still a very small colony with workers that are still quite small themselves. However, they are quite active in this, their second year.

5 Jun 09, FridayI gave these ants (as well as all my other colonies) some "Ant Jelly" the other day; they love it. I still see these ants out foraging fairly constantly which is a good indication of a nice brood presence in the nest.

These ants have been rather quiet recently. A put a greenbottle in their tank but they haven't touched it. I have just put a cricket in their tank to see what happens which one worker has just found.

12 July 2009, Sunday
They still go for expeditions into the neighbouring Tetramorium tank. I found one sitting on the Tetramorium water reservoir, and when I removed the lid of the foraging tank, the Lasius niger worker seemed to look at me in the same way a naughty dog does. I removed the covering from the nesting box to see if there was any sign of the ants, and sure enough, there in a chamber, about an inch below the surface was the queen and about a dozen workers with brood. All looked well. ;D

Not much seen in the way of foraging in this colony, but a few ants have been seen being very naughty by visiting the nearby Tetramorium tank again!

25 July,2009, Saturday
Still not too much to report today other than there has been some definite nest expansion as there is newly excavated sand granules on the surface in the nesting box, and I have seen several workers emerging from the nest entrance with sand particles in their jaws.
Several are seen in the foraging box and some workers have had to have their naughty bottoms spanked for being out of the set up. I think I am going to re-name this species; Lasius binlidicus due to the fact they are so naughty. ;D

31 July 2009, FridayI haven't seen much of these ants this week, apart from the occasional worker wandering around the foraging tank. I will check in the nesting box tomorrow.

10 August 2009, MondayActually saw 3 workers out in the foraging tank and feeding on some ant jelly. On looking in the nest the queen, workers and brood appear to be doing fine.
