20 April 2011, WednesdayWell, these ants have started to play fairly now; they are eating and there has been some nest expansion. What has caused this turn around? Over the past week I have been keeping the entire ant farm covered up instead of just having the "below ground" bit covered. Now the ants venture on the soil surface and are regularly found to be eating the flies and ant jelly (Animal Bin Lid flavour currently ) that I have been putting in for them. So the secret is obviously to cover the entire ant farm up including foraging area.

24 April 2011, Sunday
Now that I have been covering up then whole of the ant farm these ants have become far more active. Whenever I remove the covering there are ants on the surface of the soil. They are also building a tiny mound and I have noticed soil being piled up in the water test tube. I have just given them a fly.

24 April 2011, Sunday
Just thought I'd give a second update today.
I took a peek at the flavvies a moment ago top see about 12 ants eating the fly. I was also vary happy to be able to see the queen in one of the tunnels and it looked as if she was laying eggs! ;D

2 June 2011, ThursdayThis colony is really picking up now with brood present and a lot of nest expansion. They are eating every day now and the queen appears to be well and happy.

poor quen wat happens to the workers wen the queen dies because surely they will for another 3 or 4 weeks They will probably live for as much as 2 years. They will die out eventually with no queen to replace the workers lost.

1 October 2011, Saturday
Unfortunately the queen of this colony died a month or so ago and therefore this colony is dying out. I have decided to close this journal.
