3 April 2010, Saturday
Still haven't seen the queen but as before I am not overly worried. The brood pile seems to be about the same number though I did spy some brood almost hidden out of view in a small chamber that was difficult to see into.

4 April 2010, SundayI just placed a couple of dead ultra-fast spiders (those that you see in your garden, normally running across brick walls or pavements). One ant has found them, examined them for a while and has returned to the nest, hopefully telling the others that she has found food. I just checked and there are 12 ants surrounding 2 of the spiders.

1 May 2010, SaturdayIt was good to see these workers feeding from a fly I put into their tank yesterday. The workers are still very small and the cocoons that are within the nest are also very small, however, there are some larvae still present so hopefully these will have the chance to get fatter and so produce bigger workers Still can't see the queen. Where is she hiding? Oh well, I'm off to the Post Office to send Goblin some pink pigs

15 May 2010, SaturdayI noticed that the soil was a bit dry in this farm so I poured some in. Some of it went into the tunnels and into a chamber containing some cocoons. The workers very quickly removed the cocoons to a safer place and all is well. I have put a large fly into their tank but they haven't noticed it yet; probably still busy with the water alert. The queen still eludes me though

22 May 2010, Saturday
I am away from 23 May to 5 Jun and so will not be able to update this journal during that time.
I have been feeding these ants a lot more food than usual and they have responded by foraging above ground a lot more. The number of brood in the nest continues to grow, albeit slowly.

5 June 2010, SaturdayFed these ants with some ant jelly earlier which I placed near their water source. Unfortunatley some of the water leaked onto the jelly and caught two workers in its grasp causing them to drown On the upside there is a fresh batch of newly laid eggs in the chambers.

5 June 2010 - Saturday - UPDATEFurther to my post about the two drowned workers. I placed them both on a piece of kitchen towel and left it on one side. Half an hour later I looked at it again and saw the two ants twitching. Over the next hours they both recovered albeit with great difficulty as the water had stuck their legs and antennae together. Over the hour the ants managed to free themselves and I placed them back in their tanks. Note to everybody. If any of your ants are found to have drowned, do not discard them as dead. Gently scoop them out, place them on some kitchen/toilet paper and leave them for a while. Chances are they will recover. The colony is now feasting on a dead fly.

15 June 2010, TuesdayStill very slow at expanding but foraging and eating more. The queen still hides herself away but there are more larvae appearing in the nest chambers.
