Can't you keep them in your room rather than in the kitchen?

I know you are. Tell your parents that if they won't let you keep them in your room, I shall arrest them both! ;D PS> Just replied to your PS3 message. ;D

... but hes strict... lol but i suppose hes better that way It's funny you should say that as I read in a report that given the option, most bin lids would prefer to have rules in the home rather than no rules and be allowed to do exactly what they wanted without restriction. The report said that most bin lids would prefer to have some rules in the house because they then know exactly where they stand in the scheme of things.

Hmmm, I wonder who the naughtiest bin lid in this forum is. Hmmm, again. I also wonder who is the best behaved bin lid in the forum. Maybe I ought to give a prize out to the best behaved bin lid. ;D (Though I should really make that in a separate topic as it may end up going too off-topic, considering this is a Lasius flavus journal. )

How is the Lasius Flavus Colony doing now?

5 July 2009, Sunday
I gave these ants a smashed greenbottle that had flown into my house, and they loved it. 5 workers emerged from the nest and ate it. There is no foraging box connected to this ant farm as I didn't see the point considering flavus generally do not forage above ground. With that in mind I attached a test tube to the side of the ant farm. There is a water reservoir at the far end of the tube (water plugged by a cotton wool plug just as you see when receiving ants from Antstore). Then in the near end of the tube I place the food. The flavus seem to prefer this as although they emerge into the light when they go into the test tube, they seem to be happy as they are sealed from the outside environment.

They seem to like their new home and are a lot more active. The tube is still attached to the end of the ant farm and I have been using this as their food dish. It seems to work well as these ants rarely forage above ground so I still do not see the point of attaching a foraging tank. Using the tube seems to make the ants a lot happier about coming out into the light to forage.

I have just put a bit of Ant Jelly in their feeding tube and there are now 3 workers eating it. There appears to have been some nest excavation at the other end of the nesting box.

Not too much to report on this colony today. A few workers seen walking about in the feeding tube and nesting box, but I am assuming that most of the foraging is done at night, due to the fact that these ants do not like to be exposed to light for too long.

I haven't seen a lot of these ants this week. I think they have eaten so much lately that they have had enough to last them several weeks. They seem have been digging a little further up the nesting box.

I took the black wrapping off the side of the nesting box today to see what nest building I could spot. About 2 cm below the surface of the soil a tunnel emerges from the gloom and runs along the side of the glass for about 2 cm before disappearing back into the hidden areas of the nest. Every so often a flavus worker runs alongs the the tunnel as it goes about its nest chores.

The little 2cm tunnel I mentioned in the last update? Well, it has been extended and now appears on the other side of the nesting box of which about 2 inches is visible. This new tunnel branches off into two and both disappear into the middle of the nesting box.
I saw two flavus workers in the test tube yesterday but they do not look entirely comfortable, so I have wrapped the test tube up in tin foil to give the impression of being underground. I have placed some food in there and will check on it later to see if it has improved their foraging habits.
