Rubras are another good choice for your first ant colony.

Has anybody tried the formicariums from anthills.net..I had a look on their site and some of them look pretty cool, but thought I'd get some people's opinions before I buy as I've never used this site before. And is their any people would recommend?

Yes, yes, yes! Check out my review in the MANF store. I've found AntHills.net to be excellent.

Personally, if I was to advise somebody on a good British species of ant to start with, especially for bin lids, it would be;
Lasius niger (my all time favourite species) Myrmica rubra/ruginodis/scrabinodis Lasius umbratus Formica fusca Tetramorium impurum/caespitum
I would avoid Lasius flavus as they can be a vary difficult ant to get going due to their aversion to sunlight and subterranean foraging.

Thanks limes. I checked out your review and it's great, my main problem with keeping ants is my girlfriend who hates insects but will let me keep them if I can guarantee they can't escape. So my next question is which website sells the most secure formicariums to keep lasius niger ants.

I think it's more that it's too slippery to climb.
