Not to sound cruel, but I only have maybe a dozen workers left. If I buy another queen I'll get that many workers with her, so perhaps the easiest way forward is a fresh start all round. I'll keep the workers fed and watered once Ripley dies, I'm not sure if that is inhumane given their life purpose will be gone!
As a side point, I went to check on them today, dusted off the sand over the hide - empty! Normally the next thought would be escape, but the box is sealed sealed, with rubber seating. If not for the airholes it would be airtight (or there abouts). I'd still be prepared to believe the workers had got out, but no way a Queen would be able to.
So I put my brain to use and I wonder, I have been keeping the cotton wool (and by extension, the sand) wet as I was worried about them being dehydrated. Could they have dug down and now be in a tunnel system?

Can you see a tunnel entrance in the sand?

I can see a few places that could be the start of a tunnel, but I haven't dared move the box to get a better look in case I collapse everything! I will have to put some sugar water in and wait and see if anyone appears from no-where Stupid question, but how big is an ant tunnel? Will it be ant sized, or do they make the entrance wide?
