A single fertilised Queen or small colony could have got across from the Channels Isles fairly easily or a once captive colony released... (which should not be done unless you caught the Queen yourself or are 100% confident they are native to your area)
The big question is whether enough got across to settle here, and if so, how they coincidently got here and close enough to breed?
Unless someone can find a newer link than the one I posted it seems that those who found the colony are unsure if they are breeding here or whether it could have been a released captive colony.
That is why species that expand by 'budding' such as pharaoh ants and possibly inbreeding (up to 200 Queens in a colony and they won't all be related so perhaps this can't be classed as inbreeding but you get the idea) can move and settle so easily.

The website that Shiver showed was one of the ones I saw. Yes I can almost 100% guarantee that they are Lasius Emarginatus.
To Shiver: I live in the south east. The park, which I went too had several colonies of these species making me think that this species has established already.

Ah right, I wonder whether it is worth reporting to the relevant parties? Perhaps they know now, but as recently as 2009 they were unsure if they had found a single random colony or a new species living in the UK. I can't find any newer sources of information about them in the UK but I haven't tried very hard

No I don't think so, I am not sure (as this was long before I was here) but I believe this person is no longer on the forum, so I doubt there ever will be.
