Can somebody please help me out...? I have lots of crickets as I feed them to my lizard, seen as just a single cricket gives my ants a good meal I have started to feed them a few. The first time I did this (a few days ago) I caught a cricket and put it in a small container and into the fridge. After a few hours I got it out and let it thaw before feeding it to my ants. However, I felt really mean and sorry for the poor victim. Is there a more humane way to kill the crickets? I cannot feed them live as my L.Niger colony is vary small and a cricket could wipe them out! It might just be me being soft, but I would really like your help on this one guys! Any help please?

Well, as far as I'm aware a cricket starts to go into a cold-indused coma.

Freezer seems the best place. I add a bit of water to the container and give it a shake. This way I think a bit if frost may get to their brain and finish it off whilst they're in the coma. Or you may not like this because it's more personal. Get a stick or an old chopstick or similar. Pin down the critter and quickly and hardly push the stick down on its head. This, if done properly, will quickly kill it.
Just remember one life, to feed many, possibly resulting in the birth of hundreds.

The freezer is the most humane way.
Feeding them live is like how it happens in nature. However the cricket often sustains hundreds of bites and sometimes is ripped into little bits while it is alive.

Yes, the most human way is just to get the cricket and crush its head with your fingers quickly. This will be quick and effective.
P.S Wash your hand after doing it! :-P

The problem with crushing its head is that it will still be alive for a bit with its nervous system feeling all that has happened.
With the freezer the cricket will slowly get cold enough to go into a coma then die.
I personally either freeze or cut their head off. They are getting used just as they would in nature and aslong as you do not purposely cause them to suffer then I think it is okay.

When I get my rubra I will feed them some live food, out of interest and to keep things natural.

I normally get a SHARP weapon of choice and cut off it's head, simple.

Crickets don't feel pain? Please tell me you have some kind of evidence to back this up? From what I have read, the jury is still out on a verdict to that particular nugget of information. Either way, killing something is distressing to both parties, making it as quick as possible is the humane way of doing things.
