I know keeping ants can be relatively cheap.
But I have just been going through the known websites and mentioning no one some are very expensive like €290 for a queen.
Anyway my question is through interest: what is the most you have spent on purchasing ants, with the species named and how many that came with it E.G. L. Niger, One Queen + 10 ants for €1.90
Of course you don't have to mention the price if you don't wish ^_^
thanks, Sean

I can't recall how much I have spent on ants in the past, but I do recall seeing a mature Leafcutter colony selling for £1,500.

Wow 1,500....The wifey would kill me haha. But then if you can afford the set up of that kind of colony I guess it wouldnt seem like much. If I ever get a salary of over 1,000,000 pounds a year Ill buy everyone a colony! lol

It's cost me around £70... but that went on the glass setup I bought from antstore.

Yeah just buying the setup is costly. I can see why people just build their own. Unfortunitly Im not blessed with any creative skills but perhaps I can have a go at making one in the summer.

I made a ver easy and simple slimline one. Two pieces of wood of equal size. Two A4 pieces of glass take from those photo frames that clip the photo between some wood and glass. I glued the glass to the wood and made a bottom with some left overs and a stand aswell. It was really simple and really good. Well worth a try just say if you want more info.
The most I've spent on a colony is £24 including postage. It was a messor barbarus colony with 6 workers. I brought them from Ants Kallyta. Its got to be the best place to buy ants. They got to me, in england, from germany in 4 days. When I emailed them to tell them that they arrived but unfortuneatly escaped from my farm they replaced them for free except the postage cost.

Wow. I was reading that bit by bit and starting thinking where I could get some glass from and then picture frames? Excellent. Exalt +1. Bet a cheap store or even poundland would sell some. No doubt ill come back to this idea if I decide to extend my current farm.
I found Kallyta to be one of the priciest but sometimes its worth paying that extra bit for excellent service isnt it.

Yes Kallyta are well worth a little extra for more exotic species. I brought the glass and special DIY glue from The Range and the wood from Homebase. The wood I brought was cheap because it was contorted. That doesn't matter though because the glue is thick and fills in the gaps.

thats the sort of frame. Where you just unclip the glass from the front. It's hard to explain.

Yea I wasnt worried about the wood as there is alot of warehouses around here and some just throw pallets out the front so I can nick some wood from that and perhaps cut it down to size.
I did notice Kallyta do have some nice species available.

Rubra, I don't think Myrm has any problem with Antstore, and I know he has purchased many times from them.
