Whoa there bin lids around, guys Nothing wrong is being discussed here; it is a perfectly innocent and acceptable question for any 14-year-old boy to ask, or anybody to ask. Drew. Male ants have testes but in ants these are within the body (abdomen). They also have vas deferens (the tubes leading off the testes in which the sperm is stored and continue on into the urethra, just as your body has).

That's more of what I was thinking it'd be like

I agree entirely myrm. I don't know the ages of anyone here and i thought there maybe some bin lids younger than that. And at that age the subject is one for the parents and not the internet. Its also quite ihteresting how similar the ants bodies are to us.

I have kept male ants after the nupitical flights. They lasted a few days for a few they lasted over a week. : Very interesting observing it's behaviour. L. Niger

Male ants never last long. I think they naturally just peg out, whether they fly or not. I've observed some in captivity, along with some workers from the same nest and the drop off rate was much quicker amongst the males.
Personally, I've never observed violence against males by workers of their own colony, they all just seemed to die of natural causes. Also, males ants seem extremely mentally stupid. They really don't seem to know what day it is. I wouldn't be too surprised if they couldn't feed themselves and if the workers were to stop, then they'd just starve to death.

I suspected as much.
I really do wonder what the IQ of a male lasius niger ant is. They're quite a departure from their female counterparts.
I know in bees & wasps, after the males have left the nest to mate, they're not allowed back. I remember seeing youtube footage of a drone bee trying to get back in its former home, only for the workers to keeping pushing it out. They didn't harm it though, just kept ejecting it every time it came back.

I was just about to do the same thing as Myrm did but he beat me to it. I have some males in a colony of Solenopsis right now. They generally just pester the winged alates in the nest. I did have a laugh when a male was on his back and was flailing in the air. A winged alate walked by and felt over the male with her antennae and then continued on her way leaving the male to struggle and try to get up. It was like she was saying "You chase me around the nest constantly and now expect me to help you up so you can continue. I don't think so!". Flavus

Flavus You mean the males pester the young queens for food? I've observed male ants fall on their back and not been able to get up. If you've seen most winged insects fall on their back, they can usually get up immediately. What they do is spread their wings so that they can push their legs against the ground to get some lift. It seems more instinct than thought through. Male nigers however, seem to not know how to do this and end up pushing their legs against their wings, ultimatley pinning themselves down. Male ants really are "duh!".

No, they continually try to mate with the queens. The workers take care of the feeding.

I thought you meant they were pestering for food. I know queens don't generally feed themselves, but that seems more to do with being pampered, rather than being mentally incapable like the males seem to be.
