9 September 2012, SundayKK, Well I found another niger queen!!! This one was walking around on the flight deck of the ship with her wings still attached. I haven't seen any flights today in the port but it certainly is the right weather for it; warm, humid and no wind. I have put her in a plastic tub with some water in the end with cotton wool acting as a barrier. The tube has a screw on lid. I got it from the sexual offences kits we have onboard which has a test tube for urine sample testing. >.< She has settled down on the cotton wool, which is damp, but no sign of any wing removal yet. She may not be mated but we will wait and see.

13 September 2012, Thursday
KK,
The Warship nigers seem to be coping alright with being at sea, though it hasn't been rough at all. I have been feeding them with the odd fly that gets into the ship and with pieces of fresh fruit. They have also been eating the odd mealworm bettle from the tub I have.
The winged queen I found on the flight deck is still winged so I am having doubts as to whether she is actually mated. She seems quite happy being in her test tube though. If she dies I will feed her to my Warship nigers.

15 Septmerber 2012, SaturdayKK, well we are now back in port and the warship nigers have survived their first week at sea. I gave them a little fly thing the other day and they dragged it into their tube. A few days later and it was outside the tub on the other side of the little tank. They seem to be quite relaxed and calm even when I open my draw which lets loads of light in. My only concern is that they are constantly in darkness even when they are forgaging outside the tub. Lasius flavus would love it. The winged queen I captured last week is still alive but still winged. The bettles are also doing well.

22 September 2012, SaturdayJust took a peek at these ants; they seem to be doing well. Queen, workers and brood still alive I brought some ant jelly back from home with me and put some in (vanilla flavour). I haven't seen them take any notice of it yet but then again I only see them for a few minutes each day. The lone winged queen is still alive and still winged! The bettles are also doing well.

27 September 2012, Thursday
Haven't had much time this week to look at these ants due to busy work schedule, but today looking at them I am pleased to say that workers, queen and brood appear to be well and happy.
The lone winged queen is still winged and alive with no eggs laid - I guess not fertilised. Not sure what I should do with her.

I could but I doubt she'd survive vary long. I'll probably end up doing that though.

Myrm! What about the bettles! The bettles are doing fine too, Dermy. No sign of any larvae yet though.
