i've been thinking when a captive ant colony matures to the state that it can creale winged ants, what do you do? To be honest captive colonies rarely produce fliers. A couple of my past rubra colonies produced winged males and they either died in the nest of the flew away when I opened the lid of the tank.

Any idea why they don't produce them Myrm? Yes - space constraints. A large amount of room is required to be able to house many fliers, especially queens. I once emailed Marwell zoo and ask them what they did with their new queens that their Leafcutter colony produces. they told me their colonies never produce them as the colonies do not get big enough. Captive colonies may produce a few males but mostly that is it. There will always be exceptions to the rule. If you gave your colony a huge amount of space and constant high volumes of food, it may happen.

Maybe even more depending on the colony. Even small colonies like Green Ants would need a 1m squared and they are really low-key. And besides, if you did that you wouldn't be able to watch your ants as much- it might not be as fun!

I think it'd need to be a VERY tall and long one to make up for the sheer volume of a cubic ant nest needed to simulate a real ant nest size...

Hi From my experience at the largest American-based forum, we've found that myrmicines are most likely to create winged alates than from the other families. From those that I've spoken with that have had that experience, they often report that the colony will create the winged alates, but not allow them to live very long. Sometimes the alates make their way to the outworld, but are ushered back inside soon after. There have been a few cases of in-captivity mating with polygynous species.
No matter what, it shouldn't be a problem in the unlikely event that it occurred. You could remove them or release them during a nuptial flight.

Hi From my experience at the largest American-based forum. What's this? Some sort of unashamed advertising of another forum?

Too many fundamental problems. It's not as if it's my forum either. However they have a large active membership and I've noticed posts about this subject there.
